Thanksgiving is about gratitude, good food and the people around the table. It is not about scrubbing baseboards at midnight. A smart pre-Thanksgiving cleaning plan focuses your energy on the spaces guests actually notice, so you can enjoy the holiday instead of recovering from it.
We help hundreds of New Yorkers prepare for the holidays. Here is our honest guide to what deserves your time and what can wait until a later date.
CLEAN: THE KITCHEN
Your kitchen is about to work harder than any other day of the year. Give it a strong start.
- Clean out the fridge. You need the space for the turkey, sides and leftovers. Toss expired items and wipe the shelves.
- Clean the oven. A dirty oven can smoke at high temperatures. Run the self-clean cycle at least two days before, never the day of.
- Degrease the stovetop and hood. You will be using every burner.
- Clear the counters. Prep space matters more than decor today.
CLEAN: THE GUEST BATHROOM
Every guest will spend a moment here.
- Scrub the toilet,
- Sink and mirror
- Wipe the floor around the base of the toilet.
- Dispose the trash
- Set out a fresh hand towels, a full soap dispenser and toilet paper.
A clean bathroom says “welcome” better than any centerpiece.
CLEAN: THE ENTRY AND DINING AREAS
First impressions start at the door.
- Sweep or mop the entry
- Clear shoes and bags
- Make room for coats.
- In the dining area, wipe the table and chairs
- dust the light fixture above the table
- vacuum including under the table.
- Check that tablecloths and napkins are clean and pressed.
SKIP: TASKS THAT CAN WAIT
Here is the part most guides leave out. Not everything needs to happen before Thursday.
-
- Closets and drawers. Guests will not open them. Close the doors and move on.
-
- Washing every window. A quick wipe of smudges on the ones near the table is enough.
-
- Deep cleaning rooms guests will not enter. Close the door to the home office or bedroom.
-
- Reorganizing the pantry. Save it for a quiet weekend in December.
-
- Carpet shampooing. It can leave carpets damp for a day or more. Vacuum well now and schedule a deep clean after the holiday, when spills are behind you.
YOUR PRE-THANKSGIVING CLEANING PLAN TIMELINE
Spreading tasks out keeps the week calm.
-
- Weekend before: Fridge clean-out, oven clean, a full bathroom scrub.
- Tuesday: Dust and vacuum living and dining areas. Wash table linens.
- Wednesday: Mop floors, refresh the bathroom, clear counters and set the table.
- Thursday morning: Empty the dishwasher and trash, and do a five-minute bathroom touch-up.
The goal isn’t a spotless home. It’s a comfortable one where guests feel welcome and you feel relaxed. Focus on the kitchen, the guest bathroom and the spaces people pass through, and let the rest wait for a quieter week. When Thursday arrives, the hard work will already be behind you, and the only thing to do is pull up a chair, pass the stuffing and soak in the moments that make the holiday worth celebrating.
